Recently we helped a client who is wheelchair bound move out of her home. She had no family locally and had to depend entirely on us to give her relevant recommendations. So we dug in and found some AWESOME resources. We will skip over the obvious ones and just go with the resources that were harder to find.

1. Denton County Transit Authority (DCTA): If you live in Denton County or a City that has parts of Denton county within its city limits then you are in LUCK! Access is a program they have launched to provide wheelchair accessible transportation.  It does take a few weeks to get set up and the ride fee is minimal and if you have low income they can reduce the fee even further. The system is not perfect but it was the most affordable option we could find. If you are in immediate need they can expedite your application to get into the Access program.

2. REACH of Plano: This organization provides services for people with special needs who live independently.  If you ever find yourself in uncharted waters they can give you a map. They are a wealth of knowledge and you will leave feeling empowered! They have a storage room full of donated medical devises that are FREE if you have a need. I found various types of canes, crutches, transfer boards, shower chairs, and bedside commodes. If you have any durable medical equipment that you no longer need because, as we learned disabilities change over time, consider donating the item to REACH.

3. Frisco Senior Center: Most of us know that our cities have senior centers but there are additional services that they can provide that you may not know of.  The City of Frisco Senior center as a wheelchair accessible shower. Additionally, meals on wheels comes daily so if you are on the wait list you can join the Senior center for free and have a nice lunch.  (only available for 55 and up) Many senior centers also have Health Expos yearly that are open to ALL AGES. They bring in tons of vendors to provide services for the entire family! Frisco has their Health Fair on April 10th from 9am-noon
